Rockstar has released two trailers for Grand Theft Auto VI. Together they run just under five minutes. They reveal almost nothing about the plot. What they do reveal is how Rockstar introduces its two protagonists.
Lucia’s Introduction
Rockstar introduces Lucia through consequence rather than action. We meet her inside a prison, where she’s asked why she’s there. Her answer, “Bad luck, I guess,” tells us almost nothing about why she’s there. It isn’t an explanation. It’s an attitude, delivered in place of one.
The official character bio fills in the outline rather than the details. Lucia grew up with limited opportunities. She fought for her family and has just been released from Leonida Penitentiary. It ends with a single possibility: a life with Jason “could be her way out.”
Jason’s Introduction
Rockstar introduces Jason through the present rather than the past. The official character bio doesn’t trace how Jason arrived in Leonida. It begins with the life he’s already living, and closes by describing meeting Lucia as potentially “the best or worst thing to ever happen to him.”
The trailers reinforce the same idea. Jason arrives at the prison to collect Lucia on the day of her release. A guard asks, “Have I seen you here before?” Jason answers, “You might have.” The exchange acknowledges a past without revealing it.
Even as the trailer shifts toward robberies and getaways, Rockstar keeps returning to the ordinary life that first established him.
Separate Introductions
Lucia is introduced through consequence and voice. Jason is introduced through routine and action. Lucia’s introduction reaches back into her past. Jason’s begins with the life he’s already living.
Rockstar introduces Jason and Lucia as individuals before it presents them as partners.
